Prince Edward Island Squares

1 Cup Seeded Raisins
1 Cup Boiling Water
1 Teaspoon Soda
4 Tablespoons Shortening
1 Cup White Sugar
1 Egg
1/2 Teaspoon Salt
1 1/2 Cups Flour
1 Teaspoon Baking Powder
1 Teaspoon Vanilla

Pour boiling water over raisins and soda. Let cool.
Cream shortening, sugar, egg.
Add raisins, water, then dry ingredients. Add Vanilla and mix well.
Bake in shallow 8 x 12 pan for 30 minutes. Cool.
Spread with Fudge Icing

Fudge Icing:

1 1/2 Cups Brown Sugar
1 Teaspoon Vanilla
1/3 Cup Rich Milk or Cream

Boil until softball stage. Remove from heat. Beat well and add 1/2 cup chopped walnuts and spread on squares.
