Butterscotch Bread

I always make this loaf for Christmas. It is attractive without being as rich as fruitcake.

2 cups flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
11/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. nutmeg or all­spice
1 cup brown sugar
1/4 to 1/2 cup green and red glace cherries, chopped
1/4 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup buttermilk or sour milk
1 egg, whisked
2 Tbsp. melted butter

Combine flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder and nutmeg. Add sugar, mix well and add cherries and walnuts. Combine remaining ingredients and pour over the dry mixture. Stir quickly, just enough to blend. Pour into greased and floured 9x5­inch loaf pan. Let stand 20 minutes, then bake for 1 hour at 350 F. If you do not have sour milk, add 1 tsp. of vinegar to 1 cup milk.
