Date And Oat Scones

11/2 cups flour
21/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. soda
3 Tbsp. sugar
11/2 cups rolled oats
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup chopped dates
3/4 cup buttermilk or sour milk
1 egg

Preheat oven to 400 F. Grease and lightly flour a cookie sheet. Mix together flour, baking powder, soda, salt and sugar in a bowl and blend lightly with a fork. Add butter and cut in finely. Stir in dates with a fork. Beat buttermilk and egg together with a fork, add to dry ingredients and stir until dough stiffens. Turn out on to floured board and knead gently 10 times. Flatten with your hand to 1­inch thick round. Put on greased cookie sheet and mark the round into 8 wedges with the floured tines of a fork. You may separate the wedges, if you wish. Bake 25 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm with butter and/or jam.
