Irish Tea Scones (Bread) For Christmas

2 cups flour
4 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 Tbsp. white sugar
2 Tbsp. butter
1/2 cup mixed fruit
3/4 cup light table cream
1 egg yolk, beaten with a little milk
Sift flour, baking powder, salt and sugar together in a mixing
bowl. Cut in the batter with two knives or pastry blender until
very fine. Stir in mixed fruit and then add cream gradually. mixing
very lightly with a fork to make a soft dough. Do this with as
little mixing as possible. Turn dough unto a floured board, knead
a few times and form into a round shape about 3/4 inch thick.
Score surface deeply with a sharp knife to mark wedges for serving.
Brush top with beaten egg yolk and milk to glaze. Sprinkle lightly
with a bit of white sugar. Place on a lightly greased baking sheet
and bake in a 425 F oven 15 to 20 minutes until top is a deep
golden brown. Serve warm.
