Carrot Xmas Pudding

This is my grandmother's recipe from Falmouth, N.S., for the Xmas season. It tastes like dark fruitcake.

1 cup grated carrots
1 cup grated potatoes
2 cups flour
1 cup suet
2 cups seeded raisins (or seedless)
1 tsp. salt
1 small pkg. mixed peel
1 tsp. each cinnamon, cloves and all­spice

Place all ingredients in a large bowl. Add 1 tsp. soda dissolved in 1 cup molasses. Beat well and add to the above mixture. Steam 2­21/2 hours, according to the size of the can that you use to steam it in. Serve with almond hard icing dropped on each serving if you like.
