Easy Fruit Cake

This fruit cake will make two loaf pans, one tube cake or four
small loaf pans.
Put 1 pkg. (15oz.) raisins and 2 cups water into a pan and
boil for 15 minutes. Take off heat and add 1 cup of cold water.
Let stand until cool. Cream 2 cups sugar and 1/2 cup shortening.
Sift 41/2 cups flour, 1/2 tsp. salt, 1 Tbsp. cinnamon, 1 tsp.
cloves, 1 tsp. nutmeg. Dissolve 1 Tbsp. baking soda into 1/4 cup
warm water. Add all the above together, mix and add 1 cup nuts
and a cup candied fruit peel or mixture of maraschino cherries
and green cherries cut up. Bake at 350 F (175 C) in greased pan
or pans for over 1 hour, depending on the size of the pan.
