Maple Gingerbread Cake

1 cup all­purpose flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
11/4 tsp. soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. each ginger and cloves
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 cup softened butter or margarine
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 egg
3/4 cup maple or maple flavoured syrup
1/2 cup milk
11/2 tsp. lemon juice

Preheat the oven to 350 F. Prepare a 9­inch pan. Place flour, sugar, salt and spices in a large bowl, stir with a fork until blended. Beat the butter, sugar and egg until creamy and beat in syrup. Add lemon juice to milk, then stir into the batter alternately with the dry ingredients. Beat well, after each addition. Pour into prepared pan and bake 35 minutes or until toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool in pan on rack. Serve with a light dusting of icing sugar.
