Festive Cherry Triangles

Submitted by Margaret Shaw, De Sable

1/3 cup shortening
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1 egg
2 cups flour
1 can (300 mL) sweetened condensed milk
1/4 cup orange juice or brandy
11/2 cups chopped pecans
1 cup each green and red candied cherries, halved
3/4 cup chopped dates

Base: Preheat the oven to 350 F. Cream the shortening, sugar, salt and egg on medium speed until light and creamy. Gradually add the flour on low speed, mixing until crumbly. Press firmly into a 15x10inch pan. Bake at 350 F for 5 minutes.

Topping: Combine the milk and orange juice, stir in the nuts and the fruit. Mix well. Spread evenly over the base. Bake 2025 minutes. Cool and cut into triangles or squares. To cut in triangles, first cut 2inch strips, then into 2inch squares and then cut diagonally into triangles. Yield: 6 dozen.
