Festive Julekage

This holiday bread is filled with fruit raisins and almonds.
Bread:
1 (1/4 oz) pkg. active dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water
3 1/4 to 3 3/4 cups all purpose flour
2/3 cup chopped mixed candied fruit
1/2 cup golden raisins
1/2 cup slivered almonds
1/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup milk
1/4 cup butter or margarine (softened)
1 egg
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. Cardamom
1/2 tsp. Grated Lemon Peel

Glaze:

1 cup icing sugar
3-4 tsp. milk
candied cherries for Decoration

In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add 2 cups of the flour, candied fruit, raisins, almonds, sugar, milk, butter , egg, salt, cardamom and lemon peel. Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until smooth (1-2 mins.). By hand stir in enough remaining flour to make dough easy to handle. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface, knead until smooth and elastic (about 5 mins.). Place in greased bowl and grease top. Cover, let rise in warm place until double in size (about 1 1/2 hours). Dough is ready if indentation remains when touched. Punch down dough, shape into round loaf. Place in greased 9" round cake pan. Brush top of bread with melted butter . Cover and let rise until double in size (1 hour approximately). Heat oven to 350 F. Bake for 35-45 mins. (golden brown). Remove from pan immediately. Cool completely. In small bowl, stir together icing sugar and milk to reach desired consistency. Spread over cooled bread. If desired, garnish with candied cherries.
