Sugar Plum Loaf

Dissolve:

2 tbsp. yeast and1 tsp. sugar in 1 cup lukewarm milk

Add:
1 cup flour and let this sponge raise until bubbly, 10 to 15 minutes.

Cream:
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs and beat
1 tsp. salt then sponge and 4 cups flour
Add 1 cup raisins
1 cup currants
1/2 cup finely chopped citron or mixed peel
1/2 cup cherries cut in half

Knead, put in greased table pan, let rise until doubled.

Bake one hour in moderate oven.
