CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI -- A three-day cycling event along the scenic Prince Edward Island Confederation Trail encourages participants of all ages to get out and enjoy the vibrant fall colours, says Minister of Tourism Valerie E. Docherty.

“Tourism PEI is once again proud to support Island Trails and the Island East Cycling Event,” said Minister Docherty. “The organizing committee of Island Trails goes to great lengths to ensure participants of all ages experience a memorable weekend on our beautiful trail.”

The three-day event begins on Friday, October 2, at 5:30 p.m. at Winsloe Lions Club for a 20-kilometre ride to Tracadie Community Centre for a reception and entertainment.

On Saturday, October 3, the official opening will occur at the Tracadie Community Centre, after which the cyclists will begin the second day of the events. Participants will enjoy the fall foliage as they travel through the historic communities of Mt. Stewart and Morell, ending their day in the community of St. Peters, where they’ll enjoy food and entertainment.

The grand finale is on Sunday, October 4, when participants leave the seaside community of Murray Harbour at 11 a.m. and cross the finish line in Wood Islands, ending the three-day event with more food and frolic.

“Our beautiful fall colours should be at their peak during our third annual recreational cycling event,” said Event Coordinator Grace Blackette. “We already have an increase over other years in registrations from off-Island participants. I suspect that is due in part that we’ve moved the event from Thanksgiving to the weekend before.”

Participants can cycle part of the event or take in the full three-day event. Certified trail officers will accompany the participants each day. Full three-day event cost is $20 or $10 for one day. Entertainment, refreshments and many great prizes will be drawn daily.

For more information, please contact Grace Blackette at (902) 583-2412 or visit www.islandtrails.ca. For additional information, please contact Phil Arbing at (902) 628-1813.
