11/2 cups flour
21/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. soda
3 Tbsp. sugar
11/2 cups rolled oats
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup chopped dates
3/4 cup buttermilk or sour milk
1 egg
Preheat oven to 400 F. Grease and lightly flour a cookie sheet. Mix together flour, baking powder, soda, salt and sugar in a bowl and blend lightly with a fork. Add butter and cut in finely. Stir in dates with a fork. Beat buttermilk and egg together with a fork, add to dry ingredients and stir until dough stiffens. Turn out on to floured board and knead gently 10 times. Flatten with your hand to 1inch thick round. Put on greased cookie sheet and mark the round into 8 wedges with the floured tines of a fork. You may separate the wedges, if you wish. Bake 25 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm with butter and/or jam.
