We'll be staying in Souris for a week in September. Can you recommend restaurants, activities, sights or hiking trails? Thanks.

Hello Lissa,

Thank you for reaching out to Ask an Islander.

I am happy to hear that you're coming to visit! September is a great time to visit PEI.

If you're here later in September, Goolaholla will be happening on the 27th and 28th. A two-day boutique music, art, and camping festival hosted by the East Pointers. Goolaholla means GOOD TIMES.

If you're here early, be sure to take in Mi’kmaq Storytelling at Basin Head. A celebration of the deep connection between the Mi’kmaq people, the land and the importance of preserving marine environments. Also on September 5th, Lennie Gallant will be performing at the Souris Show Hall. If you're interested in this show, I would get tickets in advance if you can as I am sure it will sell out!

While in Souris be sure to visit the Souris Historical Lighthouse and Souris by the Sea Treasures. Souris Gateway Park has a lovely boardwalk that runs along the beach and over to Colville Bay. Visit some of the shops, enjoy a lobster roll or a Poke bowl, and take a stroll on the beach. You can even rent a paddleboard or kayak! Check out 21 Breakwater or The Red Claw Bistro for lunch or dinner in Souris. The Evergreen Cafe is great too! There are many great places to eat in the Souris area, you won't go hungry!

Artisans on Main, Oh Fudge, Red Bandana, and Messy Crow Studio are all great shopping experiences if you want to take a little PEI gift home with you.

Take a drive up to East Point to experience the East Point Lighthouse and Giftshop and witness the meeting of the tides! Visit North Lake Harbour, also known as the Tuna Capital of the World. Have dinner at The North Lake Boathouse Eatery while you're there.

The Prince Edward Island National Park at Greenwich is a must-see while you're in the area. It is only about a 25-minute drive from Souris. This would be a great spot for a hike. The easternmost region of the PEI National Park, Greenwich is home to Prince Edward Island’s largest sand dunes, including a rare, horseshoe-shaped parabolic dune system. Trails at Greenwich are full of stunning views, including the ones surrounding the iconic floating boardwalk on Greenwich Dunes Trail (4.6 km one way) - a treasure that should not be missed!

The Confederation Trail is another great place for a hike. You can access the trail from Souris and head east to Elmira or West to St. Peter's Bay.

I hope this helps you plan your stay in Souris. See you in September!

Valerie
