I am looking to find a cottage beach rental where my kids 5 & 9 yr olds can walk out to the beach and dig for fresh clams. And also would like to be near a harbour to find local lobster fishermans and also close to local seafood restaurants. Which beach would you recommend for this?

General Island

Hi Cindy:

Good morning and thank you for your interest in a Prince Edward Island family vacation.

The best places on the Island for both a water view coupled with private beach areas offering clam digging would be our beautiful south shore beaches. The Northumberland Strait waters located in the south are so warm for swimming and perfect for your children running from your cottage deck on to the beaches.

Here is a link to just one cottage option but I would suggest taking a few minutes to check out a few other choices along the Red Sand Shores of P.E.I. To view other options, click on the following link: https://www.tourismpei.com,  Select "Where To Stay," then key in your search criteria selection; such as Regions. Select Red Sands Shore, your arrival and departure dates, the number in your party, your Quality Star rating and this wonderful reservation system will provide you several choices.

The south shore of Prince Edward Island offers beautiful red sand beaches whereas the north shore of Prince Edward Island offers beautiful white sand dune beaches - but not great clam digging.

There are many fishing ports to explore. One on my favourites on the south shore is in a community called  Victoria By the Sea. It offers fantastic restaurants (every restaurant on the Island offers fresh from the sea options), opportunities to speak with our local lobster fishermen, great community theatre as well as some of the very best homemade chocolates.

Again, thank you for your interest in our beautiful Island. Have a wonderful family vacation.

Kind Regards,
