Kay Hryckiw
Since retiring from owning and operating a Cavendish campground—something my husband and I did for 30 wonderful years—I find myself naturally promoting Prince Edward Island to both locals and visitors. Whether it’s recommending scenic spots, great coffee shops or beautiful trails, I’m always happy to share my favourite places.
Were you born in PEI or are you an Islander by choice?
I am an islander of a different kind; I was born and grew up in a French community of Newfoundland. I have been an Islander by choice for more than 35 years.
Where do you live in PEI?
My family and I live in Rustico.
Describe what an average day looks like for you?
Most mornings start with a cup of coffee while watching the birds outside my window. Then I head to a local gym, where lively chats about food, golf, and, of course, coffee are part of the routine. I love my morning gym group! I also volunteer at the Rustico Food Bank and serve on the parents' committee at École Saint-Augustin. Community involvement is important to me!
What are you passionate about personally? What do you really enjoy? What can’t you stop talking about?
Hiking is one of my passions. My husband and I make a point of exploring as many Island trails as we can, in PEI National Park locations and beyond. One of the best parts about hiking around here—no worries about big animals! You might spot a curious fox or hear birdsong, but that’s about it—unless you pass a farmer’s field. After a hike, I always look for a nearby coffee shop or restaurant to treat myself. PEI is full of gems, and I love discovering new ones.
Beaches are another favourite. I enjoy visiting different shorelines across the Island, searching for beach glass and treasures I can use in my artwork. PEI’s natural beauty is truly inspiring.
If you had to choose one spot on the Island to take someone who has never been here, where would it be?
I'm stuck—I really do love it all.
