I really want to see the Wandering Albatross, is there a way for tourists to see them? When is the best time and where on the island, if possible?
Hello Catherine,
Thank you for your question to Ask an Islander.
As a birder, oh how dearly I would love to see a Wandering Albatross! On Prince Edward Island, Canada, you will get a chance to see lots of amazing and unique birds, but the Albatross will be an extrememly rare sighting, especially on the Atlantic coastline.
In Canada, the Black-footed, the short tailed and Laysan albatross are more commonly located on the Pacific side of Canada. They are difficult to see as they are a sea bird and do not like to step on land.
On the Eastern side of Canada we have been fortunate for a very rare glimpse at the black-browed albratross in New Brunswick, but the Atlantic Ocean only extremely rarely has an albatross sighting of any kind.
Last year we had a blogger travelling on PEI who went by the name Wandering Albatross with caused some excitement with Island birders.
If you search Prince Edward Island, Indian Ocean, you will find two small uninhabited islands where you might find the Wandering Albatross. Unfortunately, I don't have much information about that area to share with you.
Happy birding!
