My wife and I will bring our own inflatable kayaks. Where are the best places to do kayak on our own on the ocean or a river?

Hello kayak adventurers!

Prince Edward Island offers outstanding opportunities for kayaking in calm bays, along a scenic river or taking in the stunning, rugged coastline. The trick would be to find the right launch point.

In the central area, try North Rustico. There is lots of parking and easy access to the water from the beach just beyond Seagull's Nest Gift Shop. You can either paddle in the bay or go beyond the sandbar out into the ocean. Victoria-by-the-Sea is another favourite, offering easy access and a beautiful stretch of beach.

In Charlottetown, launch from the kayak dock in Victoria Park for a unique perspective of the city.

For a river adventure, head east to explore the Fortune, Morell or Montague rivers. Also in this area, Machon Point Road near Murray Harbour is another excellent launch site. From there, you can paddle to the nearby Murray Islands, home to seabirds and often a few sunning seals.

While researching your question, I came across a helpful website featuring recommended launch locations, along with a PEI kayaking Facebook group.

Kayaking has been on my bucket list for quite some time, and I think this might be the summer to finally give it a try. Thanks for the inspiration!
