What's the best time of year to catch some good thunderstorms for good storm watching?

Hello Jeffrey,

Thank you for reaching out, this is a tough one!

We don't get a lot of thunderstorms but when we do they are usually pretty intense and fast moving. I feel that mid to late summer would be the most likely time for thunderstorms, although they can happen in May and June as well and even late into the fall. "Thunder in the fall means no winter at all", is something I've heard my father-in-law say! We have even had thunder in the winter and in recent years I've heard the term 'thundersnow'. I think that is a new term.

Our summer temperatures average in the low to mid-20s by day, usually cooling down a few degrees at night. Temperatures often reach the high 20s but rarely break 30 degrees. We can get some hot weather in the middle of summer but it is rarely humid due to the persistent south/southwesterly breeze and moderating effects of the ocean.

Being an island, our biggest worries are storm surges and flooding, followed by hurricanes in the fall. Wind plays a big role in our weather in every season. In the winter a small snowfall can turn into a blizzard quickly with the high winds.

After all that, I'll have to say summer is the best chance of a thunderstorm!

Stay safe!

Valerie
