Can you dig for clams in mid or late June?

Hi Amanda,
The short answer to your question is most likely. In 2021, the recreational season for soft-shell clams was May 1 to October 30 with no harvesting on Sundays. Each year, Fisheries and Oceans Canada sets the opening date for the season based on a number of factors, including water temperature.
When the season is open, a recreational license is not required to dig clams, but you must respect season dates and limits set by Fisheries & Oceans Canada, as follows:
Clam type | Min. length | Daily limit |
Softshell clam | 50 mm | 100 |
Bar clam | 76 mm | 100 |
Quahog* | 38 mm | 100 |
Razor clam | none | no limit |
+ No Sunday harvest of quahogs |
It is also important to look for posted signage that may indicate that an area is closed to harvesting. Be mindful that our shellfish resource is also a vibrant commercial fishery for Prince Edward Island; conservation is important.
For up-to-date season information, please contact Fisheries and Oceans Canada at 902-566-7814 in late February.

A bucket, shovel and water shoes (to keep your feet protected) will make for a great adventure. Have fun!
