Can you eat the clams; found a few snorkeling?

Good morning; 

The clams you found while snorkeling are probably hard-shelled bar clams. Yes, you can eat them, unless there is a posted notice indicating that the area is closed due to contamination or that harvesting is illegal.

Here is an article that outlines how to clean the live clams as a first step. Once cleaned, you can steam the clams in a pot with a small amount of water or place them on a grate over an outdoor fire. The clams will stay closed and steam in their own juices. When they open up, they are ready to eat. Bar clams are also a delicious addition to a seafood chowder.
