Hi there. I just noticed the question about vehicles not being allowed on beaches. We’re renting a cottage in the Tignish area and we see vehicles on the beaches all the time. Are people simply ignoring the law or has something changed? Thanks.

Hello John,

Thank you for reaching out to Ask an Islander. You are correct, operating a motor vehicle of any kind on our beaches is illegal. People can apply for a permit in the case of fishing or harvesting of Irish moss. They can also apply for a permit to remove sand or gravel below the high water mark. Other than that, no vehicles should be on the beach.

There are still some Irish moss harvesters in the Tignish area, hopefully, that is who you are seeing and hopefully, they are abiding by the rules.

Take care,

Valerie
