I have some grandkids ages 4 and 5 visiting in July…they want to go fishing! Where is a good spot to catch a fish and maybe have a picnic …without going on a boat? Any ponds that are fish stocked?? Thanks Ian Dempsey

Hi, Ian,
Thank you for reaching out on Ask An Islander. PEI is a great place to take your grandkids fishing.
With little ones, we would recommend "Mooney's Pond" to fish for brook trout, which has an interpretative center and is part of the Morell River Watershed. July 18 to 21 is the River Run Festival at Mooney's Pond. Fishing rods would be available on Sunday, July 21. You would be able to picnic in this area at any time and on the 21st there is a barbeque as well. This river is very accessible, and there is a scenic hiking trail around the pond called Peggy's Trail. A phone number to call to get further details on Mooney's Pond, is (902)-583-3144.
"Carragher's Pond" is another great location for fishing with young children. It is located on the West River and has a platform for fishing. You could also picnic in this location. If the fish are not biting in the pond, you can try just below the road culvert where there is a big fishing hole, and you are quite likely to catch a fish here!
If you require bait, "Going Fishing" in Charlottetown will have everything you need.
You can find directions to Mooney's Pond and Carragher's Pond on google maps.
Children under 16 years of age do not require a fishing license. To find out more about fishing in PEI, review the PEI Angling Summary, which you can find online, and perhaps a 5 day Family License might be an option for you if adults are planning to fish. See page 42 for pics of our grandkids saltwater fishing for flounder.
We hope you enjoy your vacation time with your grandkids and that your fishing time is a lot of fun!
