My family and I will be staying on the west end of the island. I would like to take the kids, aged 8 - 12, to do catch and release fishing. Can someone recommend a place where we can catch a lot of little fish?

Good morning from sunny Prince Edward Island,
Thank you for your inquiry to Ask an Islander. Angling is a great chance to enjoy nature’s beauty whether you catch a fish or not. In Prince Edward Island, an angling licence is required for anyone 16 years of age and older; children younger do not require one. You can buy your licence online or from one of the many retailers in West Prince.
You’ll also find popular fishing locations mapped where the most common species is Brook Trout. Based on recommendations of fishing friends, here are three locations to consider:
- At Leard’s Pond, near O’Leary, be sure to check out the historic mill that operated at this location from 1888 until 2012.
- At Barlow’s Pond in Wellington your chances of getting a bite are good. The children can also enjoy the green space and playground of the Old Mills Park.
- The Miminegash River is a short stretch of river between the Little Miminegash Pond and the Northumberland Strait that is known to provide anglers with a chance for brook trout. Just a short drive away, visit the Stompin’ Tom Centre for a meal from their “taste of PEI” menu and to learn more of the Canadian musical icon.
