I have heard that sea asparagus (also called sea beans or samphire greens) grow wild in certain coastal areas. I am very interested to see them growing in their natural environment. Would you have any suggestions of where/which locations I can find this?

Hi Seth,
I thought you had me stumped with this question until I googled sea asparagus and now I feel like I've seen it everywhere! Realistically though, I can't pinpoint at which beach I've seen it, quite likely more than one! I will be looking for it from now on though, I may even try it.
Research tells me that it grows in the salty soil along the high water mark and saltwater marshes. Finding salty soil and high water marks shouldn't be too hard. We have miles and miles of red and white sandy beaches all around PEI. We like to say that no matter where you are on PEI you are never more than 15 minutes from a beach. Late summer seems to be the time to find sea asparagus.
Saltwater marshes are rare and may even be protected so I wouldn't recommend foraging around those.
A word of caution as you plan your foraging adventure, about 88% of land on PEI is privately owned. When in doubt always ask for permission. I found information on public lands on the PEI government website that could be helpful.
If you are interested in meeting other foragers, Experience PEI is bringing back their foraging experience 'First Time Foraging' in 2022! IT is a 3 hour experience that takes place in North Cape Coastal Drive region.
I hope this helps a bit. Happy foraging!
Valerie
