Tourism PEI

We will be visiting PEI from Aug 9-13. Would love to spend some time in Charlottetown seeing the sights. One of our daughters has limited endurance for walking. Any suggestions for most efficient route and highlights to see? Thank you.

Hello Anita,

Thank you for reaching out to Ask an Islander. I am glad to hear that you are coming to visit. Emerald Isle Carriage Tours is a great way to tour the Capital City of Charlottetown without having to walk. The tours leave Founder's Hall and are filled with history! Learn and see historic Charlottetown from a horse carriage.

Heritage Players and Historic Walking Tours is a guided tour of the historic city. The tour goes through Confederation Landing and Historic Great George St. where you'll learn about many of the defining moments in both Prince Edward Island and Charlottetown’s pre-confederation history. These tours are about 75 minutes long and are at a very manageable pace.

Discover Charlottetown has a wonderful walking map you can use if you want to do a self-guided tour. It has three different routes that you can follow. Shops & Services Walk – 2.2 km (20 mins.) Waterfront Walk – 6.4 km (65 mins.) Heritage Walk – 3.4 km (45 mins.) Charlottetown’s historic downtown layout makes adventuring easy, walkable, and rewarding.

Founders Food Hall and Market is a great place to start your walking adventure. It is full of vendors and fun and there is a Visitor Information Centre there where you can pick up a walking map or any other information or advice from the friendly vacation planners! From there you can take in the Charlottetown waterfront shops and sights.

Victoria Row is a cobblestone street that is blocked off to vehicles in the summer. The streets are full of nice restaurants, quaint shops and patios. You can usually hear some live music and whether it's day or night it is just so pretty.

Great George St. is one not to miss. It is one of the most historic and beautiful streets in Charlottetown, lined with colourful historic homes, the city’s largest and most intricate cathedral, and beautiful water views as you head south down the cobblestone sidewalks.

I hope this helps you plan your walk.

See you soon!

Valerie
