Red Sands Shore: Family Vacation Ideas

Here's just a small sample of the many things to see and do in the Red Sands Region.

Just outside of Charlottetown in Hampshire is the Cutest Place on Earth. Meet the animals and Farmer Flory at Island Hill Farm in any season.

Along the southern shore of the Island, you’re going to find a great many beautiful walking trails and red sand beaches. This is an ideal place to start if you’re looking for easy hikes, picnic locations, and beach combing! Spots like the Skmaqn–Port-la-Joye–Fort Amherst National Historic Site will give children a chance to run around while taking in beautiful scenery, including a spectacular view of the Charlottetown Harbour. This is a great place for young nautical enthusiasts to watch cruise ships and sailboats make their way into the city.

Further down the road, you’ll come across the charming little village called Victoria-by-the-Sea, home to artisan shops, a chocolate factory and several fantastic restaurants. This is a great place to grab an ice cream cone and let the little ones splash around at the beach by the wharf.

If you’ve got someone who likes to explore, beachcombing is always a lot of fun. Tide pools are plentiful, and you’ll find an abundance of small sea life – starfish, crabs, hermit crabs, and sand dollars along the shore at Chelton Beach Provincial Park! If the kids would rather tromp through the woods, Bonshaw and Strathgartney provincial parks offer nature trails and playgrounds to explore! If you have a mountain biking enthusiast in your family, plan to visit Brookvale MTB Park. Rentals are available.

At the base of the Confederation Bridge, visit Gateway Village to learn the story of how the bridge was built. There are shops and restaurants, with a playground and picnic area for all to enjoy!
