hello! what is the typical percentage for a tip for your restaurant server? And at your hotels, what is the customary amount to leave for housekeeping? Thank you.

Answer by:

Hello Ann,

Thank you for your question to Ask an Islander.

In Canada, tipping is not a requirement, but certainly, many small businesses and service industry employees appreciate the gesture. While tipping is completely at your own choosing, many tend to tip in the 10%-15% range for service in a restaurant. Some restaurants will have suggested amounts on their point of sale recommending the amount of tip. These can range from 12% to 25%. You can decide your own amount, skip the tip or use their suggestions.

Hotel cleaning staff appreciate any gesture of leaving a tip. Depending on the amount of service and nights stayed, a few dollar bills left at the end of your stay is welcomed.

Thank you for considering our customer service staff!
