I am smelling smoke in East Point PEI this morning. I assume from Quebec fires. Is this supposed to continue?

Hello Pam,

Thank you for your question to Ask an Islander. Yes, I could smell it too this morning. With so many wildfires on the go in New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and further west it's hard to say where the smoke smell is coming from. The path of the smoke depends on wind patterns, particularly the jet stream, and weather systems, including high-pressure ridges and troughs. It is equally difficult to say how long it will continue. There will be a possibility of residual smoke smell until the fires are contained. You can visit the Government of Canada website to view a map of Wildfire Smoke Forecast.

With the wind direction today, SSW and gusts to 40 km/h, the smell could be coming from the Nova Scotia fires.

There is currently a fire ban in effect in Prince Edward Island. "The ban on campfires and bonfires includes fires on private property as well at provincial parks and campgrounds.  Fines under the Forest Fire Prevention Act are enforced while a fire closure order is in place. Fines can reach up to $50,000, plus victims of crime costs. A person causing a fire may be liable for all damages arising from the fire."

Let's hope for some steady rain soon!

Valerie
