I will be in PEI for 10 days from Aug 30 to Sept 9. Wondering where I can buy lobster from a fisherman? Also, ideas of great music venues during this time?
Hello Robert;
Thank you for reaching out to Ask an Islander. To answer your first question, there is a late lobster fishing season from mid-August to mid-October in the western part of the province, from Tignish to east of Borden-Carleton. Your best bet is to visit a wharf and talk with a local about the best time to meet a lobster fisher coming in with a catch. A fisher should have an official peddler's licence to sell directly to you.
You can also visit these local fish markets, located near the wharfs on the south side of the Island; they buy directly from fishers each day: Waddell's, JMK Fish Mart & Fishmart Royal Star Foods.
During your visit, there is still a lot of music to be enjoyed around the Island. In Charlottetown, check out the music lineup at the Trailside Music Hall for contemporary music and comedy. If you prefer Maritime folk music in the city, visit the Olde Dublin Pub or the Old Triangle. In addition, Sounds of the Waterfront at Founders' and Peake's Quay happens daily until Sept. 1st.
Another great music venue is the Stanley Bridge Hall (pictured below). Here you will find different performers most nights of the week.
These shows are always entertaining. I highly recommend Back Home Tonight on Monday evenings - three highly talented musicians who present a lively, unique take on ceilidh entertainment. See the full Ceilidhs & Kitchen Parties and Live Music schedule.
Enjoy your visit to Prince Edward Island.
