I'm visiting the island from August 31-September 6 and staying on the south side. Looking for recommendations on must dine spots that have amazing vegetarian options for friends we're going with on the trip?
Hi Jon,
Thank you for reaching out to Ask an Islander about dining recommendations. When it comes to dining on the south side of the Island, some lovely choices are inclusive for the needs of your group. The first spot that I would suggest is the flagship location of Lone Oak Brewing Co, in the heart of Borden-Carleton. The atmosphere is convivial and the menu is relaxed. The spinach dip is a favourite. For vegetarians, there's a robust bean burger that will satisfy you after spending time exploring the Island. You will also have the opportunity to sample locally brewed beer. Afterwards, I recommend taking a walk to explore the nearby photo ops and small shops.
Next, I would be remiss if I neglected to mention The Handpie Company in Albany. This small shop makes handpies, with the original inspiration being the British pasty. These hand-held delights take flavours to the next level with the pastry made with Island butter and flour from a farm just down the way. The fillings are craveworthy. Return visitors to the Island bring coolers and ice packs with them to bring frozen handpies home to enjoy later. My two favourites are the bacon cheeseburger (definitely not vegetarian!) and the beet, corn and goat cheese-stuffed handpie (vegetarian). There are other veg-based pies and dessert pies are also available. There are picnic tables outside to enjoy the buttery pastries. The Handpie Co is a beloved spot for us locals.
Lastly, I suggest heading to Victoria to explore and feast. There is a selection of spots for dining. A great choice for the needs of your group is the Lobster Barn. Lots of local seafood options as well as vegetarian options. If you can grab a seat on the patio, you'll find yourself right beside the water. To me, that is wonderful al fresco dining!
I wish you and your group a wonderful trip to Canada's Food Island!
