Is early May 2026 a good time to visit? Where are the really best, quirky, interesting places to eat? Is it easy to drive about the Island, or is it better to rely on public transportation? We are usually tour people.... we like to explore independently.

Hello Terry,
Thank you for your question to 'Ask an Islander'. From fresh seafood, different attractions, and exciting festival and events, May is a lovely time of year to visit Prince Edward Island. Some quirky and interesting places to eat that initially come to mind include:
The Island Stone Pub located in Kensington is a pub located inside the historic Kensington Train Station. After your meal, you could even walk along a portion of the Confederation Trail, which is built on the decommissioned railway line.
Reddins is secretly located on Victoria Row in Charlottetown. It is a vintage, yet modern-day speakeasy and prohibition-era themed cocktail bar. Access requires a secret monthly password. (Shh... You can request it through their email address [email protected] in advance).
Fin Folk Food located in Grand Tracadie is an interesting restaurant because it is located alongside the beach. Take in the beautiful waterfront views as you enjoy your delicious meal, or you might even catch the television featuring a live feed from an osprey nest nearby.
Hopyard in Charlottetown is a great atmosphere to hear your favourite tunes because they have the option for guests to play your own vinyl.
Blue Goose Restaurant in Hampton is a family-run restaurant with home cooked meals, including a nostalgic and iconic hamburger from the former Peter Pan Restaurant (a classic Islander go-to hamburger).
Prince Edward Island is divided into three Coastal Drives that all have beautiful scenery and have many fun attractions and things to do along the drives that make each of the coastal drives unique. Depending on where you stay, I'm sure you will find one of the coastal drives (Points East Coastal Drive, Central Coastal Drive, and North Cape Coastal Drive ) a good base to get your bearings with your planning.
The freedom to explore independently is great, as it allows you to be flexible and on your own timeline. Tours and excursions are also enjoyable because you can sit-back and enjoy without too much detail in planning. No matter how you decide to explore, I am confident you will discover beautiful scenery and exciting things to do from tip-to-tip.
I hope this helps with your planning to Prince Edward Island. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to reach out again.
Kind regards,
Keira
