Is it possible to actually try gathering oysters/clams/mussels or is this pretty much a commercial venture?

Hello Douglas,

Clam digging is still a popular activity in Prince Edward Island. Soft shell clams, bar clams and quahogs are the most sought after. Razor clams are fun as well, it's amazing how fast these guys can move! Mussels are a little trickier as they like to hang out on and under rocks in the water. I personally have never found a wild mussel!

Oyster gathering is only for those with an oyster fishing license.

So if you decide to give it a try, please have a look at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans webpage 'What do I need to know before harvesting shellfish?' for the rules, size and catch limits and information on closures.

Regards,

Valerie
