My son is travelling there next week. Where and what fish could they catch? Is there a certain town you might recommend for a fishing guided tour?

Thank you for reaching out to Ask an Islander. Your son will enjoy Prince Edward Island this time of the year.  The Striped Bass will likely be hitting the south shores of the Island by next week. They are great fun to catch on the beach.  I am not sure if they have the appropriate gear for beach fishing striped bass, but if not, they could look for a guided tour as you mentioned. Richard's Bait & Tackle in Alberton, in western PEI, offers guided beach fishing opportunities. They can provide the fishing gear if your son doesn't have gear. They can be reached at 902-807-9207. No fishing license is required for striped bass.

There are also opportunities to angle for speckled trout.  Fishing licenses are required for trout. Details on fishing licenses and bag limit requirements can be found at www.princeedwardisland.ca/angling.  Be prepared for mosquitoes and blackflies this time of the year if they go trout fishing in inland waters. The trout fishing has been slow this year. You can purchase an angling license and fishing gear at Going Fishing in Charlottetown. They can also provide information on areas where trout are currently being caught. 

They may also choose to fish for winter flounder. No license is required for this species in tidal waters. Winter flounder can be caught off many wharfs and bridges on PEI. One of our favourite fishing spots is Corran Ban Bridge on Route 6.

The guided fishing trips for cod and mackerel don't start until July. So the above options are the best opportunities this time of the year.
