River fishing?
Hello Phillip,
Thank you for reaching out to Ask An Islander. We understand you are looking for some advice on river fishing on PEI.
River fishing is limited at this point in time in PEI due to warm water temperatures. In September, you can fish for brook trout and Atlantic Salmon on the upper reaches on the Morell River and the Mill River. The Morell River is in eastern PEI (fly fishing only) and Mill River is in western PEI and also the West River is an option in Central PEI.
You require an angling license, which can be purchased on line at www.princeedwardisland.ca/angling. This site will provide you with the details for purchasing a license and the seasons and bag limits. All Atlantic Salmon must be released.
In the tidal portions of Island rivers, shore lines and beaches, you can fish striped bass as well without a license. The methods for beach fishing is bait and tackle which can be purchased locally at Going Fishing in Charlottetown and Richards Bait and Tackle in Alberton. The season is open until October 31, and you can retain up to 4 striped bass per person a day with size limit to retain being 50 to 65 cm in length. Lure fishing for striped bass is also popular but most commonly done from a boat. Guided bass fishing trips are also available through Richards Bait and Tackle in Alberton and PEI Striped Bass expeditions in Charlottetown. You can check websites for their contact details.
We hope you enjoy your visit to PEI and your fishing experience.
