We are from NZ and are visiting Prince Edward Island for 1 week early August. Which places should we visit as have a car but also like walking and cycling. We are staying initially for 3 days in Charlottetown.
Greetings from Prince Edward Island. We’re excited to welcome you all the way from New Zealand!
For starters, everything you need to know about Downtown Charlottetown can be found at Discover Charlottetown. Here are some of my must-do recommendations:
- If you’ll be downtown on a Sunday, plan to visit the Downtown Charlottetown Farmers’ Market, which takes place on lower Queen Street from 10 am to 3 pm. You’ll find more than 60 local vendors selling crafts (pottery, woodwork, artwork, hooked rugs, knitted goods), homemade soap and body products, clothing and jewelry, as well as fresh produce and baked goods; there is also Canadian and ethnic food service.
- Be sure to check out Peake’s Wharf on the Charlottetown Waterfront, where you’ll find amazing indoor and outdoor dining, live music, and gift shops.
- Enjoy a delicious meal and live music on Victoria Row, a pedestrian street in historic downtown Charlottetown.
- Take in a live performance. The Charlottetown Festival has a fantastic summer line-up (book your tickets in advance, as we’re expecting a very busy season – I’ve already purchased my tickets for Tell-Tale Harbour in mid-August). Check out The Buzz for a complete list of community events, as well as local art, music, theatre, and film.
For walking and cycling, I recommend the following:
- Hike or bike a segment of the Confederation Trail, which is PEI’s portion of the Trans Canada Trail. It was developed on abandoned railway beds, so it takes you across the Island, along the countryside, and through quaint villages.
- Explore a stretch of the Island Walk PEI. This new trail circumnavigates the Island; it includes parts of the Confederation Trail and also takes you along the coast and picturesque red dirt roads.
- Explore the trails and dunes at Greenwich, one of the most beautiful places on the Island.
I hope this information is helpful. If you have more questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us again.
