We are staying in Summerside, where is the best place to go clam digging and what do we need?
Hello Gaylene,
Thank you for reaching out to Ask an Islander. Maximville is a very popular spot for clam-digging. Maximeville is about a 30-minute drive from Summerside. Or 30 minutes in the other direction, Victoria by the Sea is another popular clamming spot.
You will need a bucket and something to dig with (clams are very fast). I also like to wear footwear of some sort for stepping on the shovel. Some brave souls do it barefoot, but, as I mentioned, clams are fast! You want to get the shovel quickly.
Although you do not need a license to dig clams, it’s important to keep in mind that shellfish is a commercial fishery; conservation is important. Please respect that the daily catch limit for all species is 100 per person in total.
Also, check out the Department of Fisheries and Oceans webpage 'What do I need to know before harvesting shellfish (clams)?' before heading out!
Have fun!
Valerie
