What is the best scenic drive on the island? I would like to see the Red Sea cliffs and PEI National Park and also the ocean. I would like to see Green Gables.
Hello Karen,
Thank you for reaching out to Ask an Islander! All of the scenic drives are amazing, but since you want to see the Prince Edward Island National Park, the red sand, and Green Gables then maybe the Central Coastal Drive is the best option for you. It has all of those! The whole scenic route is 253 km so it's easily done in one day if you want.
Green Gables Heritage Place is located in the Green Gables Shore region as well as the PEI National Park. I really enjoy the drive from North Rustico to Kensington. It takes you through Cavendish, down to Stanley Bridge and New London and then up Route 20 to French River and Park Corner. I think French River might be the most photographed harbour in PEI! It's got a charming little wharf lined with colourful fishing shacks. In Park Corner you could stop in and visit Anne of Green Gables Museum, a museum dedicated to the life and works of the author of Anne of Green Gables, Lucy Maud Montgomery.
Then you can head down towards Red Sands Shore via Kensington and then Borden-Carleton. You'll get a great view of the Confederation Bridge and then the beautiful red sandy beaches. Swing by Victoria by the Sea, a lovely seaside village full of artisans, restaurants, red sand and warm waters at the beach. Visit Canoe Cove Beach located in Lloyd Inman Memorial Park at low tide for the most spectacular view of the red sand flats.
Take some time to stop by Skmaqn–Port-la-Joye–Fort Amherst National Historic Site. The fort’s grassy ruins are still visible, and interpretive panels explore its rich history. The grounds also offer amazing views of the surrounding countryside and Charlottetown Harbour.
Have a great time!
Valerie
