What rivers in pei are wadeable for sea run trout and what are the best times of year?
Hi Peter,
Thank you for reaching out on Ask An Islander.
September can be a good time to angle for trout on the Island. Cooler evenings have helped lower the water temperature in Island rivers but we need a good rain to raise the water levels and get the fish moving upstream.
The two rivers we would recommend in September are the Morell River and the Souris River in Kings County. The Morell River
is fly fishing only and after September 15th it's hook and release only for sea run Brook trout, and all Atlantic Salmon must be released. Refer to the 2025 PEI Angling Summary at www.princeedwardisland.ca/angling to view the river maps indicating fly fishing zones, bag limits and size retention for trout. Early mornings and evenings are the best times to angle for trout on the Morell.
The Souris River has a good run of sea run Rainbow Trout ( Steelhead Trout). You can wade along the river using both fly and barbless lure. Try shrimp flies for best results. The best spots are along the Souris causeway and the bridge at Gowan Brae up river. Refer to the same site for bag limits.
Goodluck and enjoy your Island fishing trip.
