Where can I launch a kayak on fresh water and fish?

Answer by:

Hi there, Julie.

Thank you for reaching out on Ask An Islander.

We understand you have an interest in catching fish in fresh water with a kayak.

Prince Edward Island has very few lakes or ponds where you could kayak and catch a fish in summertime.

There are a number of fresh water rivers that can be kayaked and fished but they are shallow and you would be paddling against the current to get back to your vehicle.  If you still are keen to try this, Grant’s Bridge on the Morell River to Indian Bridge is a paddle with trout opportunities. However, the river is quite shallow in the summer. You would need a nonresident fishing license for this experience.

You can also launch a kayak at the Bonshaw Bridge in West River and paddle to St. Catherine’s Bridge while fishing for trout along the way.  A fishing license would be required here as well.

We would recommend you try some of our salt water bays and estuaries to experience some better quality fishing.  You can launch your kayak at St Peter’s and fish the bay for striped bass and trout.  No fishing license is required for salt water bay fishing.  The bay is quite calm most times, and we have had lots of luck on this bay.

Another good spot for bass is Mt. Stewart to Scotchfort on the Hillsborough River.  There is a boat launch in Mt. Stewart. No license is required here either.

If you are spending any time in the Western end of PEI, you can try Northport Harbour near Alberton.  This bay offers excellent striped bass and mackerel fishing.  No license required.

Look up the Provincial Angling Summary for details on the angling seasons and bag limits along with information on how to purchase a license.

Have a wonderful vacation and enjoy your time on the water.
