Where can we watch potato harvest?

Answer by:

Hi Phyllis,

Thank you for your question to Ask an Islander.

In Prince Edward Island, the potato harvest begins in September. Potato farms are spread throughout rural areas of the Island, with notable concentrations in communities such as Tyne Valley, O'Leary, Kensington, Kinkora, Cardigan, Vernon Bridge and Rollo Bay. With more than 86,000 acres dedicated to potato farming, finding fields is easy almost anywhere in PEI.

If you’re interested in taking a tour, there are several options. The Canadian Potato Museum offers tours of a working farm, scheduled according to the farmer’s availability. Another great choice is Taters, Tractors & Tales, which provides an engaging, hands-on experience at a working farm, also based on farmers' availability.

If you plan to visit in early October, consider celebrating the Island’s abundant harvest and supporting the ‘Buy Local’ initiative at Farm Day in the City. This event takes place on October 5. Be sure to allocate time to explore the market and participate in the wide range of complimentary activities offered throughout the day, including live entertainment and agricultural exhibits.

Enjoy your visit to Prince Edward Island.
