We are going to take my kids to Cavendish’s beach next few days. We want to take the kids to dig clams there for fun. Just wondering where is the best place that we can take my kids go digging clams?
Hi Eric,
Thank you for reaching out to Ask an Islander! The kids will love Cavendish beach! You cannot dig for clams in the Prince Edward Island National Park which Cavendish is a part of and the north shore isn't great for clam digging anyway.
Clam digging is usually done on the south shore at low tide. Some places better known for clam digging are Maximeville, Pinette, Victoria or Tea Hill.
Victoria by the Sea might be the closest to Cavendish, about a 30 minute drive south and Tea Hill is about 45 minutes from Cavendish.
It's always a good idea to visit the Department of Fisheries and Oceans webpage "what do I need to know before harvesting shellfish" before you head out. You do not need a license to dig clams but there are size and catch regulations that you should be aware of. Then all you need is a bucket, a shovel and keen eyes!
Have fun!
Valerie
