Hi. We are staying in Summerside PEI for one full day at the end of August. What would be the most scenic drive & can you advise the best places to eat? Thank you.
Hey there MJ!
Thanks for reaching out to Ask An Islander- I have a feeling that one full day will turn into a want to come back for many more!
For scenic drives, one of my favourite areas on the Island is close by - I’ll spell it out a bit but definitely take a look at Google Maps to get your bearings. I would leave Summerside and head towards Kensington - from there, take a left towards Malpeque Bay and follow that road around the coast through Darnley, Park Corner, French River, New London, Stanley Bridge, Cavendish, Rustico and then make your way back towards Summerside via New Glasgow, taking the hilly countryside in through that view. Definitely take some time to explore the beaches around all of those areas - there will be some park fees to pay as you come into the Cavendish area but very worth it (and very reasonable).
If time allows, I would highly recommend heading to North Shore Canteen - easily top 3 restaurants on the island for me. Chef Alex and his team update their menu weekly or more and everything is incredibly fresh, well cooked and proper. Fish to beef to shellfish and everything in between.
Another great stop is Samuels in either Summerside or Cavendish for coffee - their date square is also one of my all-time favourite things to eat on the Island.
Another great spot would be the Blue Mussel Cafe in Rustico - great area to walk around, great food and great drink here. An Island staple!
I invite you to download or order our 2024 visitor’s guide. You can always stay in touch by signing up for the Tourism PEI newsletter which includes details on upcoming festivals and events and recipes too!
Hope that helps!
Thanks,
Al Douglas
