Hello,I am visiting PEI for a week at the end of June. Are there any public fishing spots around the Queens wharf or any of the piers around there or confederation Landing areas

Answer by:

Hello Derek,

Thank you for reaching out to Ask an Islander. It's nice to hear you are looking forward to some fishing while visiting PEI at the end of June. Yes, you can drop a line off the Charlottetown Wharf. The most popular location is the end of Queen Street by the large 2025 sign. The Mackerel will be running as well as striped bass on the Hillsborough River. No angling license is required to fish in PEI tidal waters. You do need to follow other angling regulations concerning bag limits and retention size for these species (see regulations).

Mackerel can be caught using "feathered hooks" which you can purchase from Going Fishing, a bait and tackle shop on St. Peters Road in Charlottetown. Yellow is our favourite for Mackerel. Striped Bass can be caught on a lure or bait (gaspereau or mackerel), which you can purchase at the same store.

You may want to try fishing under the Hillsborough Bridge as it offers more potential to catch both Mackerel and Striped Bass. It is a popular location for locals. Check out the PEI Striped Bass Facebook page for tips and locations where the fishing is good while you are visiting the Island.

Safe travels on your trip to PEI, and we hope you enjoy your fishing experiences while you are here.
