I’d love to know if there are any hidden gems of beaches to take my kiddos to find shells and sea glass in early August. Thanks so much.

Hello Kira,

Thank you for reaching out to Ask an Islander! I am happy to hear that you are coming to visit us in August. With over 1100 km of coastline, Prince Edward Island has no shortage of beaches and they are all fabulous. I do find that the beaches on the south side of the Island are best for finding shells and sea glass. I think it's because the water on that side is a bit calmer than on the north side. You should still visit the north side beaches, though! The beaches of the Prince Edward Island National Park are a sight to behold and there is no entry fee this year. (No treasure hunting here though. Take nothing but memories).

The Points East Coastal Drive boasts 50 phenomenal beaches so that might be a good place to start. Souris Beach is well known by sea glass hunters. The town even has a sea glass festival in July! It's not a hidden gem, but it is not overly crowded either.

I love going to Fortune Beach where I walk the flats when the tide is out and search for sand dollars. I've had days when I didn't have enough hands to carry them all (be careful, they're very delicate and will break easily when wet) and there have been days when I've been skunked. There are always lots of snails, hermit crabs, razor fish and even sometimes starfish! You can often find sea glass here too. This beach is a little harder to find. It is located just outside of Souris, off of Route 310 to Cove Road. Drive to the dirt road, turn right and you're almost there. This beach is a bit of a hidden gem. No amenities here so keep that in mind.

If you're in the Central Coastal Drive region, Canoe Cove Beach is a beautiful red sand beach that is great for young kids. When the tide is out, they can wander around and play in the little tidal pools and search for treasures and little creatures. There are washroom facilities, picnic areas and a playground. Amazingly, some days or times you could be the only people on the beach!

Have fun!
