If I only have 1 day on the Island from cruising, what hike should I do to see the prettiest scenery?

Good afternoon Sandra;

Thank you for reaching out to Ask an Islander. For the most spectacular hike, I suggest the new section of the PEI National Park near French River. From the eastern end of Cape Road, walk on the beach and along the cliffs toward Cape Tryon. At this point, turn around and see the view from the other direction. It takes about two hours.

My second recommendation is the long route of the Homestead Trail  in the Cavendish section of the PEI National Park. This hike takes two to three hours (download map from https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/pe/pei-ipe/activ/sentiers-trails)

My final thought if you prefer a wooded, hilly area, is to hike the single track at Strathgartney Provincial Park along the West River. Enter from the parking lot at 17025 Trans Canada Highway. This area, known as the Lookout has a nice vista. You can start from here along the trail, which is approximately 8 km. This trail is connected to Bonshaw Hills Provincial Park, with another 14 km of trails.

I invite you to download or order our 2024 visitor’s guide. You can always stay in touch by signing up for the Tourism PEI newsletter which includes details on upcoming festivals and events and recipes too!

Have a wonderful cruise vacation!

Cheerio!

Ruth
