I've heard PEI is beautiful in the Fall, so I'm wondering what time is the best time to experience a PEI Fall: Sep., or Oct, a certain week or two, or both months?!Thanks for your time
Greetings from Prince Edward Island!
Fall is a lovely time of year to visit, as the weather is usually still warm, and the rich fall colours begin to appear toward the end of September.
First and foremost, I suggest she check out the PEI Fall Flavours Festival, which will take place in October (the dates will be announced soon – keep an eye on the website for details), and the PEI International Shellfish Festival from September 14-17. PEI is known as Canada’s Food Island, and these two festivals celebrate locally-farmed/fished/produced food, as well as our music and culture. They’re not to be missed!
One of our favourite events of the year is Farm Day in the City, which celebrates PEI’s bountiful harvest. It features farmers, food vendors, crafters and artisans from across the province. It’s the Island’s largest outdoor market and street festival of the year, and there’s truly something for everyone. It’ll take place in downtown Charlottetown (on Queen Street, from Grafton Street to Water Street, along Victoria Row), on October 1.
The best way to experience the fall colours is by following one of our three coastal drives. The routes mostly follow the spectacular coastlines of western, central and eastern PEI, and take you inland as well, through some of the Island’s most charming rural communities, villages and towns. While it is technically possible to do all three scenic drives in three days, I don’t recommend it, as you’ll spend all of your time in your car. Pick one scenic drive and do it really well, or pick sections of each drive and do those smaller sections really well. While doing these tours, if you’re feeling adventurous, turn onto one of the Island’s many red dirt roads you’ll come across along the way… they bring scenic to a whole new level.
Another way to soak in all the rich beauty of the season is to explore a stretch of the Island Walk. We plan to do this this summer!
The PEI Preserve Company in New Glasgow is a wonderful place to eat (I recommend the potato pie with maple sauce!). While you’re there, be sure to explore the Gardens of Hope (note that between September 5 and October 8, the restaurant is open from 9am to 4pm; it then closes for the season).
I hope this information is helpful. If you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to reach out again!
