Good morning from Prince Edward Island,

Thank you for your inquiry to Ask an Islander about cycling in Prince Edward Island.

One of the best times to cycle the Confederation Trail or the lovely separate cycling/walking paths in the Prince Edward Island National Park is the second or third week of September. Tourist traffic is quieter this time of year, the weather remains good and there are enough places open to suit your needs. If you want to see the leaves change colour, the first week of October is a good time. However, PEI can get more rain this time of year.

Two sections of the Confederation Trail that make for a nice cycle are as follows:

  • Colville Road/Route 9 to Hunter River and onto Fredericton or Emerald: Here in the central part of the province, you’ll find trees, long views over farmland, a few bridges over creeks and for farm animals to pass as well as a small village where you can find amenities and something to eat.

  • Morell to St. Peters along St. Peters Bay: If you are comfortable cycling along a quiet road, I'd recommend a visit to the PEI National Park at Greenwich. If you do the park, take a lock for your bike and walk out onto the boardwalk and over the dunes to the beach. The views are spectacular.
