Where is the best place to see wildflowers for the month of August ?
Hello Beatriz,
Thank you for your question to Ask an Islander.
People laugh when I tell them, "Prince Edward Island has the most beautiful ditches in the whole wide world." We really do!
In August, in our ditches you may find the Blue Flag Iris, Seaside Goldenrod, Yellow Coneflower, Blue-eyed Grass, Chicory and sadly the beautiful but invasive Garlic Mustard and Purple Loosestrife.
Prince Edward Island's Acadian Forests are also a wonderful source of amazing wildflowers. Some of my favourite places to wander are the trails at Roma at Three Rivers, the MacPhail Homestead and Bonshaw Provincial Park.
Swamp milkweed is very popular this time of year to feed the butterflies. The pink and white flowers have a lovely vanilla scent.
I was delighted to find a small amount of Anemonastrum canadense on one of the trails at Roma at Three Rivers. A rare find. Of course, I did not have my camera with me!! Then imagine my sheer joy at a small very rare cluster of Boneset! I hope to get down there again this week!
I have been combing MacPhail's Homestead looking for the Nodding Trillium.
With over 600 species of plants on the Island, you will find lots of wonderful wildflowers and display of colours.
Enjoy the colours!
