Hello Marissa,

Thank you for your question to Ask an Islander!

I'm glad to hear you are interested in visiting our beautiful province! Now, whether or not taking the Confederation Bridge or the NFL Ferries is better for you depends on your specific circumstances. If you are leaving the Island and wish to get to somewhere in Nova Scotia as quickly as possible, then the Ferry would be the best bet for you because the NFL Ferries take you from Wood Islands, P.E.I., to Caribou, Nova Scotia. Meanwhile, the bridge takes you directly to New Brunswick. Depending on where you are initially coming from or leaving from (New Brunswick or Nova Scotia), then either the bridge or the ferry might be the most convenient and viable option.

The Confederation Bridge rates are cheaper than the ferries. The bridge costs $50.25 CAD to leave the province (yes, it's only an exit fee). Meanwhile, the ferry costs more to leave the Island than the bridge (the rates vary depending on vehicle, but a typical vehicle will cost $86 CAD when departing on the ferry). The only time you have to pay travel fees for either the bridge or ferry is when you are leaving; you do not pay any fees when you arrive. There are only exit fees. For a guide to Confederation Bridge fees, click on this link, and this link for a guide to NFL Ferry fees! Keep in mind the ferries may be delayed/cancelled depending on what the weather looks like, so that may impact your decision!

The Ferries are located at the Eastern end of the province. The East is beautiful, and some of the highlights are Cape Bear Lighthouse (the first lighthouse in Canada to receive the distress signal from the Titanic in 1912), Georgetown, Montague, Souris, and Basin Head Beach! The sands at the beaches down East are all white sands. Meanwhile, the Confederation Bridge lands you in the Red Sands Shore Region, which is close to Green Gables Shore. In both of these areas, I suggest the Anne of Green Gables history, Victoria-by-the-Sea, Chelton Beach, Argyle Shore (a red sand beach), and Kensington

If you have any more specific questions or needs, please feel free to reach out!

Kind regards,

Bret MacCaull
