Ice cream and the Island - a perfect combination! While there are many places on PEI that have ice cream, I have found two that make it and both are in the east.
About an hour drive from Belfast in Souris look for 'Cherry on Top Creamery'. Rebecca makes her ice cream with fresh PEI ingredients and is creative with her variety of flavours - for example; Nutella Crunch and Kettle Corn. Dairy-free and vegan options will also be available. Most importantly, everything will be handmade, “from the sprinkles, to chocolate sauce, cookie dough, peanut butter cups.” You can find this deliciousness at 120 Main St. in Souris.
In Charlottetown there is a food truck specializing in ice cream, just watch for the line-up on the corner of Church & Grafton St. for 'Truck n' Roll'. This Island experience makes your ice cream special order on the spot from PEI ingredients. Try 'Mint to be' or 'Auntie Grandma's Special Cookies'.
Just outside of Charlottetown there is the Cow's Ice Cream factory that you can tour. Cow's ice cream is also available in downtown Charlottetown and on the Charlottetown waterfront at Peakes Quay.
The other ice cream offerings on PEI are mostly made at Amalgamated Dairies Ltd. (ADL) in Summerside and are wonderful. ADL ice cream is available at 'Miller's' and 'How Boat This' in Murray River and at 'Harbourview Restaurant' in Murray Harbour. There is 'What's the Scoop' in Montague and further afield, in Summerside 'Kool Breeze Ice Cream Barn' and 'The Frosty Treat' in Kensington.
Oh I almost forgot! It's not in the east but well worth the trip, Holman's Ice Cream Parlour in Summerside also makes their own gourmet ice cream.
I hope that covers your ice cream cravings!
